| | FC Tolworth was formed before the start of the 2005-2006 season and entered the Leatherhead and District Sunday Football League. The club was set up by a close knit group of friends from the Sunray estate in Tolworth, who had been itching to play football in the same side as each other for many years. A lot of commitment and determination finally got the ball rolling, with sponsorship, players and pitches all finalised in time for the clubs debut season. The committee members of the club would be Alex Gates as Chairman, Dave Hunt and Paul Dale as Treasurers and Neil Wicks would be Secretary as well as Team Manager. The club got sponsorship from Tolworth's Broadway Bar Cafe and confirmed that their home ground would be Deckers Sports and Social Club in Kingston Road. The majority of the original squad had not played any form of football for nearly 10 years so it was going to be interesting to see if some of them still had the talent that they did all that time ago, fitness was a big issue too, so there was a lot of work to be done. So the season starts & its not looking good, with just two wins from the first eight games, a new strategy is discussed & its decided a Manager should be brought in from the outside. Neil & Stuart Wicks' dad, Eric Wicks was approached & after contracts & wages were sorted, Eric said "Yes" & relieved Neil of his Managers role to concentrate on what he's good at.....scoring goals! Eric had unbounded experience & immediately sorted things out, winning 13 & drawing 3 & losing just 4 games, one of those losses against AFC Lanes in the Final of the Lower Junior Charity Shield when going down to a hotly disputed penalty, given by a Female Referee! So promotion was given to Division six & we finished runners up to rivals Il Cappricio (nee Tugas Utd) by two points after they were awarded the points from a game they lost to an ineligible player on their opponents team, but for that, we'd have been Champions! Another Cup Final was reached and this time we end up winners after Neil Wicks scored a hat trick as we put Dynamo Molesey to bed 3-0 in the same Cup as last year. Neils goals meant a total of 50 goals scored for the season, remarkable….. Promotion to Division Four was the prize & we went on to win the division & once again reach a Cup Final, this time the Junior Charity Cup, one up from the two previous years. Dynamo Molesey were our opponents again, this time they gain revenge for last year, winning 1-0. Division Three was next, once again, we went on to win the Division & also reached the Final of the Surrey County Junior Challenge Cup where we met Chessington Park Rangers & after going a goal down early on, we went on to win the match 2-1 & the Cup for a very fine League & Cup double. Promotion to Division One followed & we played out the season unbeaten with just two draws & conceding only ten goals, a remarkable achievement, also, once again reaching a Cup Final, this time the one above from last term, the Surrey County Premier Challenge Cup where we were to meet holders Barnes Albion. This time though, after taking the lead just after half time through Neil Wicks, we conceded a late goal for extra time to be played, this was goalless & we finally lost the match on penalties, a cruel way to lose any game! | |
